Introduction

Gawton Gravity Hub is a downhill riding destination near Tavistock, reached from the B3257 between Gulworthy and Bere Alston. Its named tracks offer flowing red-level riding and much more demanding technical descents. Choose it for repeated downhill runs and deliberate progression, with the bike and experience to control sustained descending. The riding areas require a valid day pass or membership, so organise access before setting out.

The operator uses its own distinctions, including double red and double black. Keep those labels when comparing tracks: turning a double red into an ordinary red would hide useful information about the step up. A first visit should give you time to learn the hillside, not create pressure to try every named descent.

HSD

Red

The operator describes smooth, flowing lines and curves, with the challenge increasing as speed rises. It is the sensible starting point among the tracks described here when red-level descending already feels comfortable. Keep the opening run controlled so you can judge the day’s grip and the features before deciding to increase pace.

Proper Job

Double red

Rock gardens, large berms, drops and tabletops make Proper Job a progression choice beyond the smoother first run. The operator explicitly grades it double red. Inspect the parts you intend to ride and decide whether your handling is consistent enough for a complete descent; following another bike does not show you how to approach each feature.

Egypt

Double black

The dedicated operator page identifies steep gradients, roots and rocks along a twisting woodland descent. This is an expert technical choice. Assess the line without obstructing riding traffic and be willing to leave it alone. Control on an easier Gawton run does not establish that Egypt’s terrain is an appropriate next step.

Mega Tavi

Double black

Mega Tavi is described as a very steep extension of Super Tavi. The operator advises inspecting and discussing it before attempting the descent. Reserve it for established expert ability, with an understood route through the features. The word extension does not imply an easier add-on or a harmless way to lengthen a familiar run.

Best first ride

Read the club’s riding rules before arriving. A helmet is compulsory, while the operator recommends a full-face helmet, eye protection and body armour. Use an appropriate maintained bike and prepare it for the riding you actually intend to do. Spend the first descent learning where to brake and where the line changes direction, then repeat a suitable run until it feels settled.

The club advises against riding alone. Agree a meeting point with your party and keep a working phone available. When returning uphill, use the designated push-up or uplift track; walking up the downhill tracks is prohibited. That rule also matters when inspecting a feature: choose a safe approach that keeps you out of riders’ lines, and ask the club for guidance if the access is unclear.

Where is Gawton Gravity Hub?

Follow the operator’s current directions from Tavistock towards Gunnislake on the A390, turning at Gulworthy onto the B3257 towards Bere Alston. Use the signed Gawton Gravity Hub entrance, not an improvised access through woodland or a neighbouring property. Official directions →

Follow the operator’s current directions from Tavistock towards Gunnislake on the A390, turning at Gulworthy onto the B3257 towards Bere Alston. Use the signed Gawton Gravity Hub entrance, not an improvised access through woodland or a neighbouring property. Download the directions before travelling and keep the entrance clear while organising bikes.

At Gawton, the pass or membership confirmation serves as the parking permit and must be displayed clearly as instructed. Keep proof of riding access available as well, with identification where required by the membership arrangements. A pass is for a person and the specified date, not permission for everyone sharing a vehicle. Prepare the documents before leaving home so the start of the ride is straightforward.

Facilities

Bring food, water and essential repair equipment. The official hut page describes redevelopment and future facilities, so this guide does not promise a staffed café, kitchen or new toilet building on an ordinary visit. Confirm any facility essential to your party directly with the club. Packing a proper break avoids making the day depend on finding refreshments available at the hillside.

The operator’s website marks the pump track closed for redevelopment. Do not choose Gawton on the assumption that a child or companion can practise there while others ride the downhill tracks. There is no confirmed reopening date in that notice. Keep the party’s plans realistic, and choose a different activity when the intended riding depends on a currently unavailable facility.

Arrange the return to the top before relying on assisted laps. The homepage mentions an uplift service, but it does not establish a current operating timetable or available booking for your date. Contact the club about present arrangements and be prepared for a session using the designated return track. Private-vehicle uplifting is prohibited by the rules, so making your own shuttle is not an alternative.

Opening times and prices

The operator advertises riding from sunrise to sunset seven days a week. A valid day pass or membership is required; follow its parking-permit and riding-access instructions.

Seasons and weather

The club publishes riding from sunrise to sunset. Plan the session within available daylight and leave enough time to finish and load up calmly. Choose runs according to conditions as well as their signs: rain, surface debris and poor visibility can change an otherwise familiar line. A slower opening run and regular breaks are useful even for a rider returning to the same track.

Respect every closure, fence and designated boundary. Membership does not allow altering a track, building a feature or moving outside the authorised riding area. Take all litter home and leave dogs behind or restrained as the club requires. The rules also prohibit camping, fires and barbecues on site and in the car parks; arrange overnight accommodation elsewhere.

A base in Tavistock

Tavistock makes a practical town base for meals and overnight accommodation. The Bedford Hotel offers rooms and dining on Plymouth Road, while Tavistock House Hotel and Rockmount Rooms provide other verified town stays. In the surrounding Gulworthy area, the Horn of Plenty has overnight rooms and Woodovis Park offers camping. Reserve the accommodation type that suits your party, and discuss bicycle storage and arrival directly.

For companions taking a separate town day, Tavistock Pannier Market is an indoor shopping option managed by the Town Council. Its stalls and market themes vary, so consult the current opening information before planning a visit. Agree transport and the time to reconnect with the riding party. Keep that outing separate from the downhill area, where a pass and the riding rules still apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride without a pass or membership?

The operator permits only members and pass holders in the riding areas. Buy access for the correct person and date and keep the confirmation available as required.

Is Proper Job an ordinary red trail?

No. Its dedicated operator page grades it double red and identifies rock gardens, berms, drops and tables. Retain that distinction when choosing a progression run.

Can I walk back up a downhill track?

The club prohibits walking up Gawton’s downhill tracks. Use the designated push-up or uplift track and keep riding lines clear when returning uphill or inspecting features.

Is the pump track available?

The official website marks it closed for redevelopment. No confirmed reopening date is given there, so organise another activity if your visit depends on pump-track riding.

Can I arrange my own vehicle shuttle?

No. Private-vehicle uplifting is prohibited under the club’s rules. Ask the operator about current arrangements and plan around the designated return track if assisted riding is unavailable.
