Introduction

Hafod Trails is a family-run uplift bike park near Llansawel, on the Carmarthenshire side of Brechfa Forest. Its defining idea is progression: a green descent, two blues and a choice of more technical reds and blacks let riders build a day around repeated laps. Vehicle uplift makes the return part of the session, so you can spend your energy on learning corners and features instead of repeating a climbing track.

The park suits a group with different ambitions as long as everyone chooses a sensible starting point. A newer gravity rider can concentrate on Floverload and the blues while an experienced visitor works towards the technical reds. The blacks require established skills and commitment. Book an operating session before travelling, complete the Rider Pledge and keep the hill’s rules separate from the access arrangements for neighbouring Brechfa trails.

Hafod Trails mountain bike trails and grades

Floverload

Green

The green starting point uses broad sightlines, gentle gradients and rolling ground. It is also a useful reset lap later in the day. Ride it slowly enough to learn where to brake, where the next corner opens and how the surface feels; an easy grade does not require a fast run.

Official route information →

Peek-a-Blue

Blue

The operator’s first blue step adds tabletops, steps and slightly steeper sections between flowing turns. Features are described as rollable at a controlled pace. Build confidence with the wheels on the ground before trying to jump, and leave enough space to stop safely if the rider ahead slows.

Official route information →

Space Melon

Blue

Linked jumps and berms give this blue a more continuous rhythm. The operator also identifies roots and rock steps, with the surface changing in different weather. Use several repetitions to learn the timing and carry only the speed that leaves you able to adjust the line.

Official route information →

Ground Control

Red

The most technical red brings larger rock features, drops and off-camber lines. It belongs after confident riding on the other reds, not as the immediate step from a comfortable green lap. Stop in a safe place to inspect unfamiliar features and ask staff how today’s conditions affect the line.

Official route information →

Life’s a Beech

Black

This black builds in difficulty as it descends through beech woodland, with its strongest technical features lower down. The operator reserves it for experienced riders. Do not let an approachable entrance decide whether the whole trail is suitable; you need a plan for the harder sequence as well.

Now in a Minute

Black

The second black has linked committed features including shark fins, bomb holes and a road gap. Those are specialist obstacles, not a compulsory finish to an uplift day. Leave this line out unless your existing skills match it, and never follow another rider into a feature you have not understood.

Best first ride

Start on Floverload and take time at the base to understand the uplift loading and return arrangements. Make the first lap a sighting run, with no attempt to chase someone else’s pace. On subsequent runs, work on one movement at a time: controlled braking into the turn, relaxed arms or looking towards the exit.

Once the green feels consistent, Peek-a-Blue gives a measured next step. A coaching session with the park’s Pro Ride partner is useful when a specific skill is holding you back. Repeating the right trail produces a better day than collecting every grade.

Where is Hafod Trails?

Use the operator’s location link for Hafod Trails, Llansawel, SA19 7PH. Official directions →

Use the operator’s location link for Hafod Trails, Llansawel, SA19 7PH. The destination is the bike park near Llandeilo, not Hafod Estate near Aberystwyth. Arrange your final approach around the park’s map and signs, give local traffic room on narrower roads and unload without blocking the vehicle or uplift circulation.

Choose a date and session on the booking calendar and complete the Rider Pledge before riding. Day-session sign-on begins at 9.30am, with uplift from 10am to 4pm. The adult day uplift price is published as £38, with £28 for riders aged fifteen or under. Session availability and the final booking terms control the day you can actually attend.

Facilities

The Grub Hub provides cooked food, snacks and hot and cold drinks on operating days. It makes a natural meeting point between laps and a sensible place to take a longer break. Bring water onto the hill and carry any food you specifically need; eating and drinking should not depend on how quickly you complete another descent.

E-bikes are welcome when they meet the park’s stated EAPC requirement and the motor does not propel the bike beyond 15.5mph. Loading your bike securely onto the trailer is your responsibility, with staff available to help. Do not cycle on the uplift track. Save the emergency number given at sign-on and keep the handlebar identification band in place.

Seasons and weather

A wooded Welsh hillside changes character after rain. Familiar turns can become looser or muddier, and roots or rock steps need a different approach when wet. Reduce speed on each first lap, inspect technical sections from a safe position and stop before fatigue starts changing your decisions. A spare warm layer makes a break at the base more comfortable.

Twilight Friday and evening sessions have separate sign-on and uplift times. Suitable lights are required for those sessions between September and April. Use the calendar for the actual dates offered and leave the trails within the operator’s finishing allowance. There is no trail access when the park is closed, so do not arrive expecting an independent push-up ride.

Camping and places to stay near Hafod Trails

A base in Llandeilo or Lampeter

Llansawel is the nearest named village; Llandeilo and Lampeter offer wider choices of accommodation and evening food. Pick a base around your approach to the park and the second day’s riding. Ask the property about bike storage and wet kit directly, since an ordinary room booking does not guarantee specialist facilities or permission to charge a battery indoors.

Pair an uplift day with Brechfa’s forest routes, using NRW’s current diversion notices. For time off the bike, visit the National Trust’s Dinefwr estate near Llandeilo.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hafod Trails good for beginners?

Floverload is the green progression trail, with broad turns and gentler ground. Riders still need basic braking and balance skills. Book coaching if you want a structured introduction, and do not make blue or red progression a condition of enjoying the first visit.

Do I need to book uplift?

Choose and pay for an available session through the operator’s booking calendar and complete the Rider Pledge. The day ticket includes uplift and trail access. There is no access outside operating sessions, and the uplift track is not a riding route.

Can children ride at Hafod?

Riders fifteen and under must remain with an eligible adult, with both paying for passes and no more than two children per adult. Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds must ride with a named buddy. Read the full supervision terms when booking.

Are e-bikes allowed?

Yes, under the operator’s published EAPC rules. Follow the trailer-loading instructions and staff advice. The presence of a motor does not change which features suit your skills or permit riding on the uplift access track.

Which trail is the first blue choice?

Peek-a-Blue is presented as the next step from established green riding. Its features are rollable, but steps and steeper sections need more control. Learn the line at a calm pace before deciding whether jumping belongs in your session.
