Aviemore, Glenmore and Rothiemurchus give mountain bikers a broad choice of forest tracks, loch circuits and longer journeys from one accommodation base. The attraction is the way the ancient pinewoods open towards the Cairngorm skyline: a gentle ride can feel like a proper Highland outing without demanding a technical descent. Rothiemurchus publishes named cycling routes, while the surrounding national park offers responsible access suited to riders who can navigate and adapt their plans.
This is a riding region, not a single colour-graded trail centre. A family loop beside the lochs and a strenuous Burma Road outing need very different expectations, equipment and weather. Start with the estate’s cycling map, then select the distance that fits your group. In Glenmore, current wildfire recovery and forestry closures restrict several familiar connections, so an old circular-route file is not an assurance of an open passage.
Aviemore, Glenmore & Rothiemurchus: classic mountain bike routes
Three Lochs Trail
10.8 km loop
Rothiemurchus’s gentler loop visits Lochan Mor, Loch an Eilein and Lochan Deo through the pinewoods. The estate suggests one to two hours, leaving room for pauses and shared-path encounters. Keep speed low around lochside walkers, and choose a stopping place that leaves the track fully open.
The estate’s longer circuit reaches quieter woodland with mountain views and a downhill finish. Its suggested two to three hours is an outing estimate, not a race target. Carry food and repair equipment, save the map offline and decide which shorter return you will use if a member of the group tires.
The estate describes a route towards the Green Loch of 12 kilometres each way. FLS confirms the Ryvoan Trail, Green Loch and Ryvoan Bothy access are open after wildfire recovery work. Use the current national-park closure map for onward connections rather than assuming an old circular-route file is usable throughout.
Visit Cairngorms promotes the steep estate-road crossing into the Monadhliath as a demanding mountain-bike outing. It is a separate ride from the easy Rothiemurchus circuits, with exposed ground and a substantial climb. Use the published route, allow for slow climbing or pushing, and turn back early when wind or visibility makes the higher ground unsuitable.
The estate PDF maps Three Lochs, Ancient Forest and the Old Logging Way. Glenmore closures and wider mountain-route access require their own current notices.
Three Lochs is the strongest introduction for a rider new to the area. Begin with the estate map and agree where the group will regroup at junctions. Take the distance as a complete loop, allow extra time for children and make the first outing about getting comfortable on shared tracks. A lochside pause gives the day a natural destination without pushing everyone into a bigger circuit.
Experienced visitors can follow the Ancient Forest route before choosing a separate Burma Road day. Those outings have different characters: one extends the forest experience, while the other demands more fitness and exposed-route judgement. Avoid combining unfamiliar routes into an oversized first day. Navigation, enough daylight and a realistic return plan matter more than the distance on a device.
Where is Aviemore, Glenmore & Rothiemurchus?
Aviemore, Glenmore & Rothiemurchus is reached from Inverdruie / Aviemore. Use the official map and route-specific starting point. Official directions →
Aviemore is reached from the A9 and has a railway station on the Highland Main Line. Rothiemurchus’s visitor centre is at Inverdruie, with Glenmore farther along the ski road. Select the starting point for the route you intend to ride, since parking at Loch Morlich and starting a Three Lochs loop are not interchangeable plans.
Use the land manager’s car parks and current payment instructions. Carry the estate cycling map and OS Explorer OL57, Cairn Gorm & Aviemore, for the local forest area. For a wider Burma Road trip, select map coverage for the complete return before departure. A plotted line is useful only when its junctions, surface and current access notices also make sense.

Facilities
Rothiemurchus has the Barn Café and Farm Shop at its visitor centre, and the estate maintains visitor paths, parking and toilets. These facilities make Inverdruie a useful meeting point before or after a ride. Take water and food onto the route instead of planning to find refreshments at every loch or forest junction.
Aviemore has accommodation, food and cycle businesses; arrange the correct bike size and collection slot directly if hiring. A natural ride needs tools, a spare tube compatible with the bike and clothing that works when you stop. Treat e-bike range as a planning limit and agree charging and storage with your accommodation before booking.
Bike hire at Aviemore, Glenmore & Rothiemurchus
In Your Element provides adult and children’s bikes and e-bikes from the Pavilion at Rothiemurchus. Half-day and multi-day options include a helmet, lock and puncture kit.
Forest shelter helps on breezy days, but higher routes can have very different conditions. Autumn brings shorter daylight, and winter ice can make an ordinary gravel corner treacherous. Reduce the route when a group is cold or visibility deteriorates. Keep a dry layer for the return and do not use a remote outing as a first test of an unfamiliar bike.
Wildfire recovery work continues in Glenmore. FLS keeps Allt Mor car park and its surrounding area closed for repair; the national park also lists Allt Mor path and Lodge Trail closures. Harvesting around Badaguish restricts connections. Stay on open forest roads and promoted trails because dangerous fire-damaged trees remain in the burned area, particularly in windy conditions. Follow the live closure map and barriers.
Camping and places to stay near Aviemore, Glenmore & Rothiemurchus
A base in Aviemore
Aviemore offers the widest choice of places to eat and sleep for a multi-night trip. Glenmore suits visitors who want Loch Morlich close by; an Inverdruie or southern Aviemore base is convenient for Rothiemurchus. Choose accommodation around your intended route starts, then ask about secure storage, wet equipment and any e-bike charging rules.
The Barn Café is an easy post-ride food stop at Rothiemurchus, while a rest day beside Loch Morlich keeps you close to the landscapes you came to enjoy. Save a separate day for Cairngorm Mountain Bike Park if you want managed gravity trails. That paid venue has its own passes and season, so it should not be treated as another freely accessible forest loop.

RIDE PREPARATION
Kit for this ride
Consider what suits the route, forecast and your own experience.
Is Rothiemurchus suitable for family mountain biking?
The Three Lochs Trail is the estate’s gentler named cycling choice. Children still need to control their bikes and handle the full distance. Allow time for rests, give way courteously on shared tracks and choose a shorter return when the group has had enough.
Are these trails colour-graded?
The estate’s cycling page presents routes by character and distance, not trail-centre colours. Use the named route description and your group’s skills to choose. A broad track can still have steep sections, loose surfaces or a tiring return.
Which Glenmore closures affect a ride?
Allt Mor car park and surrounding area remain closed, with Allt Mor path, Lodge Trail and Badaguish harvesting restrictions shown by the land managers. Ryvoan Trail, Green Loch and Bothy access are open. Use the national-park closure map before choosing onward connections.
Is Burma Road a beginner ride?
It is a demanding climb and exposed outing. Visit Cairngorms identifies it as a substantial mountain-bike route. Build confidence on the lower forest circuits first and choose a settled forecast, with enough time and energy for the complete return.
Which OS map covers the forest rides?
OS Explorer OL57, Cairn Gorm & Aviemore, covers the central Aviemore, Rothiemurchus and Glenmore area. Take the estate cycling map for its named routes, too. Wider rides need complete map coverage and a current closure map, including the route back.
