Introduction

Ride the Gap’s high mountain circuit, choose Talybont-on-Usk’s valley and forest routes, or head to Talgarth for the Black Mountains Classic. Bannau Brycheiniog offers natural mountain biking through linked bridleways, permitted tracks and valley connections, with different starting towns and demands. The Gap suits experienced riders; Talybont also has shorter options and practical village facilities.

Use OS Explorer OL12, Brecon Beacons National Park — Western area, and OL13, Eastern area, to plan the region’s rides. Match sheet coverage to the whole circuit, including your return. The eastern Black Mountains are distinct from the Black Mountain range in the west. Select a published route and its start before booking accommodation: exposed mountain crossing, forest loop and canal outing are very different days.

Brecon Beacons & Black Mountains: classic mountain bike routes

The Gap

Red — published regional route grade · 30+ km — published circuit

Mountain Bike Wales describes a circuit combining the canal, Taff Trail, Brinore Tramway and Gap Road. Its mountain section is open and windswept, with a ravine and rock steps among the technical points. The listing also warns about a ford on the tramway descent. Assess the exact published alignment and current access before leaving; do not enter floodwater simply because an old route file crosses it.

Pontsticill Crossover

Talybont’s community cycling page names this challenging ride alongside its forest and Tramway options. Use the complete route card to identify the start, direction, climbs and return. No fixed distance is given here because published versions differ. Plan the exposure and road links as carefully as the off-road sections; a compact loop on a map can still be a substantial mountain day.

Talybont Tramway route

The village cycling page identifies a shorter, gentler Tramway option alongside its harder mountain rides. However, the same page carries an undated closure warning concerning the old tramroad beside the reservoir. Ask locally about the intended section and any authorised diversion before relying on this route. Its easier description does not establish that every historic connection is currently available.

Black Mountains Classic

Visit Wales names this challenging mountain-bike adventure from Talgarth. Treat it as an experienced rider’s route requiring a detailed map and realistic assessment of climbing, daylight and remote terrain. No colour grade or distance is assigned here because those details depend on the specific published version you select. It is a different planning proposition from a short ride near the canal.

Best first ride

Start with a published itinerary that leaves room for stops and navigation. For the Gap, identify the high crossing, descent and ford before departure; use an authorised alternative when water levels make a crossing unsafe. Follow mapped bridleways and permitted connections throughout. Keep the route offline, carry independent navigation and agree a turnaround point before the mountain climb.

Use lawful cycling routes. Welsh public bridleways permit bicycles, and appropriate byways or agreed permissive routes can provide other connections. A public footpath alone does not give a cycling right. Open-access shading on a map is not general permission to ride anywhere across the hillside. Verify uncertain links with the access authority or land manager and give walkers and horse riders space on shared tracks.

Where is Brecon Beacons & Black Mountains?

Brecon Beacons & Black Mountains is reached from Talybont-on-Usk. Use the official map and route-specific starting point. Official directions →

Talybont-on-Usk is a useful start for its published local circuits, with Henderson Hall providing visitor parking through donations. Use the hall’s current arrangements and leave entrances clear. Talgarth suits an eastern mountain plan, while Brecon or Crickhowell may be more convenient for your chosen accommodation. Avoid transferring a parking instruction from one route version to a different starting town.

The park’s own shop sells a mountain-biking pack containing route cards and maps. Use it alongside current access information, not as a guarantee that conditions remain unchanged. When approaching by public transport, arrange the final bicycle connection to your selected start separately. Agree return transport beforehand, including companions’ separate plans.

Facilities

Henderson Hall’s own facilities page lists the Talybont Bike Hub wash, public toilets and coin-operated showers. It also describes visitor parking and donation arrangements. These are village facilities, not services spread throughout the mountain network. Allow time at the end to wash down without blocking other users, and carry enough food, water and essential repair equipment for the complete route.

The region has no single reception where every ride begins. Sort out any hire, guiding or repair requirement directly with the business involved before travelling. Ask overnight hosts about drying wet clothing and storing bikes securely; neither service follows automatically from a hotel’s proximity to the mountains.

Seasons and weather

The Gap’s published description specifically warns about bad weather on exposed high ground. Wind, low cloud and heavy rain can turn a familiar-looking track into a difficult navigation or retreat problem. Compare the forecast with the route’s exposure and choose a lower alternative when needed. Carry an insulating layer and waterproofs even when the village feels comfortable at the start.

Respect closures, livestock and the working landscape. Keep gates as found, slow down around other users and avoid widening muddy tracks onto the surrounding vegetation. A short, controlled ride on an appropriate route is more useful than pressing on through conditions that exceed the group’s skills. Make someone aware of your intended circuit and expected return, then tell them when everyone is safely back.

Camping and places to stay near Brecon Beacons & Black Mountains

A base in Brecon / Talybont-on-Usk

Talybont Stores’ Canalside Café offers food in the village beside the canal, providing a practical place for a meal before or after a local ride. Its own website directs visitors to current business hours, so arrange the timing separately from your route estimate. Brecon and Crickhowell offer alternative overnight bases; select one that keeps the next morning’s transfer realistic for your chosen circuit.

For companions near the Black Mountains, Talgarth Mill offers working-watermill tours, a café, bakery and craft shop. Tours depend on volunteer miller availability, with advance booking advised. This provides an activity with its own focus while riders are away, but arrange transport and opening times in advance. Do not make a remote mountain party responsible for collecting someone at a precise time with no contingency.

Frequently asked questions

Is this one waymarked trail centre?

No. It covers a wide riding region with routes from different towns and villages. Choose a published circuit, obtain its navigation information and establish the relevant start before travelling.

Can I ride any path shown on the map?

No. Bridleways and suitable byways provide cycling rights, while permissive access depends on the agreement. A footpath or open-access designation alone does not authorise cycling. Confirm uncertain connections with the responsible authority.

Is the Gap a beginner ride?

Mountain Bike Wales publishes it as red, with exposed mountain terrain and technical points. Distance, weather and self-sufficiency matter alongside handling skills. Choose a shorter, lower route if those demands are unfamiliar.

Is the Talybont tramroad definitely open?

That cannot be confirmed from the undated closure notice on the community cycling page. Ask for current local access information before including the affected section and follow any authorised diversion.

Where can I wash the bike afterwards?

Henderson Hall in Talybont lists a visitor Bike Hub wash, public toilets and coin-operated showers. Arrange your ride around its current facilities and remember that a distant mountain start does not have the same provision.
