Introduction

Wind Hill Bike Park is a descending and freeride destination on the Longleat Estate near Warminster, Wiltshire. B1KE publishes blue, red, black and pro-line choices, giving riders several ways to build a session around their existing skills. Start with the blue Bluetopia line, then decide whether a jumping or more technical direction suits the day. There is enough variety to repeat enjoyable runs without chasing the hardest category.

The operator uses a coloured trail grade alongside a separate dot rating for feature size. Understand both before choosing a descent: a red with larger commitments is not interchangeable with every other red. The park’s published grading guidance requires basic off-road experience and does not offer green beginner trails. For a first visit, plan around inspection and controlled repeat runs, leaving time and energy for the return uphill.

Bluetopia

Blue, one dot

The operator’s main trail heading uses this spelling and recommends it as the opening run. Rollers, berms and jumps introduce the flow-focused riding. Establish your braking points on the first lap and follow the intended signed blue connection at each turn-off. A familiar companion’s choice of branch is not necessarily the line you have planned to ride.

Empuru

Red, two dots

This progressive jump line branches from the blue trail and includes step-ups, step-downs and berms. Before adding it to a session, assess the present features against your jumping experience. Build consistency on a suitable line before increasing pace, and ask the crew about safe inspection.

Pass the Dutchie

Black, two dots

The operator describes a more natural technical descent with off-camber roots and an optional rock garden. It offers a different focus from the jump lines, but remains a black trail. Choose it for established technical handling, and let grip and visibility dictate speed. Optional airtime does not make difficult roots, braking points or line choices disappear.

Pay Rise

Red, three dots

This named red option carries the operator’s higher feature-size rating. B1KE explains that three-dot features can require unavoidable commitment and leaving the ground. Read the feature signs before entering, and do not treat red alone as a complete description of the challenge. If those commitments are unfamiliar, returning to a suitable lower-rated line is a useful riding decision.

Best first ride

Start with Bluetopia at a controlled pace, with space between you and other riders. Stop only where you are clear of the line, and use the designated routes uphill and authorised entry points. The park’s rules give through-riders priority when someone is sessioning a section. Never wait on a landing or step into a blind part of the track to watch a friend.

Decide whether the aim is cornering, technical control or jumping, then choose a run that allows repeatable practice. B1KE advertises coaching at Wind Hill if you want help with that progression. Tell the coach what you can already ride and what you would like to improve. A productive session can stay on the same suitable trail throughout; moving up a grade is only one possible outcome.

Where is Wind Hill Bike Park?

Use B1KE’s Wind Hill parking instructions, with The Red Way, Warminster, BA12 7NW as the published location. Its terms specifically say not to enter Longleat’s main entrance for bike-park parking. Official directions →

Use B1KE’s Wind Hill parking instructions, with The Red Way, Warminster, BA12 7NW as the published location. Its terms specifically say not to enter Longleat’s main entrance for bike-park parking. From the designated car park, the approach crosses the estate entrance road, so move carefully with bikes and children. A navigation destination for the safari attraction is not the correct substitute.

Register with B1KE and obtain the day pass before travelling through the current website or app. The operator says passes cannot be bought by simply turning up, and limited connectivity can make a last-minute online purchase difficult. Keep your membership barcode accessible. Each rider needs the appropriate pass, including eligible members whose pass itself costs nothing; use family accounts when organising younger riders.

Facilities

Bring your own suitable mountain bike: B1KE’s current contact FAQ says it does not provide ordinary bike hire. Pack water, lunch and compatible essential spares. Its terms describe limited snacks, drinks and toilets, which are useful support but should not become the sole basis for a full day’s supplies. Ask the park directly if a particular facility is important to your visit.

Wear a helmet and arrive with your bicycle maintained, including working brakes and fitted bar-end plugs. The operator strongly recommends a full-face helmet and additional protection; choose equipment suitable for the planned terrain. Its terms allow pedal-assist e-bikes and exclude throttle-equipped machines. Discuss anything unusual with the operator before booking, and never assume a powerful motor compensates for a lack of descending skill.

Seasons and weather

Wind Hill’s own page publishes daily operation, with shorter October–March hours ending at 4pm or last light. Use the selected session and current park notices to establish the day’s actual finish. Allow a margin for the uphill return, packing and the walk to the car. A late arrival should change the riding plan, not lead to squeezing a final unfamiliar descent into poor light.

Rain, leaves and cold can change how a familiar line rides. Use the first lap to assess grip, and take breaks before fatigue affects braking or judgement. Follow temporary closures and the crew’s directions throughout the day. The operator’s terms acknowledge that maintenance or extreme weather can close tracks, so a booking and a general opening pattern do not guarantee access to every line.

Camping and places to stay near Wind Hill Bike Park

A base in Warminster / Frome

Warminster and Frome offer overnight bases with different evening choices. The Bath Arms at Horningsham provides pub meals and rooms on the Longleat Estate, while the Old Bell advertises accommodation in Warminster. Confirm meal service and your arrival time directly. Ask any chosen host about secure bicycle storage and wet kit, as an overnight booking does not automatically include specialist rider facilities.

For companions, Longleat sells separate visitor tickets for its attractions, grounds and gardens. Select the appropriate ticket and date directly with Longleat, and organise transport independently of the bike-park parking. A B1KE day pass does not replace admission to those attractions. Agree a flexible meeting time around the separate bookings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I arrive and pay at the gate?

B1KE says day passes must be obtained in advance through its website or app. Register and arrange the correct pass before travelling, since the operator warns that connectivity on site can be limited.

Is the blue trail suitable for someone who cannot yet ride off-road?

The operator requires basic off-road experience and has no green beginner trails. Bluetopia is its suggested starting line for a park session, but a complete novice should build bike-control skills first or discuss coaching.

What does a three-dot red mean?

The colour describes terrain difficulty, while dots describe feature size. B1KE says three-dot features are large and can be unavoidable. Assess both ratings before choosing Pay Rise or another high-commitment line.

Can I hire a mountain bike there?

The operator’s current FAQ says ordinary hire is not provided. Arrange a suitable bicycle before travelling and ask directly about equipment requirements if your bike or intended activity is unusual.

Can I park inside Longleat’s main entrance?

B1KE’s Wind Hill directions explicitly say not to enter the main Longleat entrance. Use the designated bike-park car park and follow its approach instructions, taking care where the route crosses the estate entrance road.
