Introduction

Hilltop brings purpose-built flow riding to the former golf-course land at Sandwell Valley. The builder names five trails: Respect Your Alders, The Big Short, Strollers, Out Of Bounds and Throstles. Berms, rollers and jumps give the site its character, with a published spread of two blue, two red and one black trail. Choose it for repeated descents and skills practice within an urban park landscape, keeping the surrounding shared routes separate from the downhill lines.

Sandwell Council’s current project page confirms the urban bike park is open to the public. The wider scheme lies near Swan Pool and also uses former Hill Top Golf Course land across the Birmingham boundary. Those place names explain why different directions can describe the same broader development. Aim for the Hilltop riding area and its signed entrances, with enough time to understand the layout before committing to a descent.

Hilltop Bike Park mountain bike trails and grades

Respect Your Alders and The Big Short

Both names appear on OnTrack’s official Hilltop page. The builder describes flowing trails with large berms and jumps, but does not assign each readable name to its individual grade. Use the current entrance board for that decision. Start slowly enough to understand the turns and identify any feature you want to inspect before a faster return run.

Strollers and Out Of Bounds

These are two more operator-published names within the five-trail park. They belong to a purpose-built progression network, so choose the signed grade that matches your current riding. A short descent still deserves a complete first inspection. Keep the return journey on the designated approach and leave the descending line clear when regrouping or discussing a feature.

Official route information →

Throstles

Throstles completes the builder’s named list. Hilltop’s overall provision includes a black trail as well as blue and red options; the name alone does not establish which one this is. Read the signs on arrival and separate the decision to follow a particular trail from the decision to ride every jump on it.

Five named trails provide two blue, two red and one black option. Read the entrance board for each named line’s grade.

Best first ride

Begin with the park information board and walk the section you intend to ride. A first lap can focus on controlled braking and finding the exits of the corners, leaving speed for later repetitions. Choose one manageable line as the group’s starting point and give younger or less confident riders time to settle. The builder describes clear progression through the grades, but progression is useful only when the rider remains comfortable with the features actually present.

For a more experienced session, pick a specific objective such as cornering smoothly or assessing a particular jump. Repeat a suitable section after watching how the surface and other riders affect the approach.

Where is Hilltop Bike Park?

Use the Sandwell Valley riding area near Swan Pool and the former Hill Top golf course. Follow entrance signs and agree the parking meeting point. Official directions →

Plan arrival around Sandwell Valley and the former Hill Top golf-course riding area. The council places the wider urban bike park close to Swan Pool; that is useful context, but it is not a promise that every valley car park gives direct access to every trail. Use the council’s park information and local entrance signs to settle where to unload. Allow time for a short approach with your equipment and agree a specific meeting point.

West Bromwich is a practical reference town for an overnight visit. If arriving independently from different accommodation, share the actual parking destination before travelling. A railway or bus arrival in the town still leaves the final transfer to organise, including bicycle carriage and any roads used on the approach. Avoid arranging a pickup inside a trail landing or on an access gate; move to the agreed public meeting place when the session ends.

Facilities

Bring the bicycle and protective equipment you intend to use, plus drinking water and compatible repair essentials. A council confirmation that the bike park is open does not establish an on-site hire counter, workshop or uplift service. This guide therefore does not promise those services. Prepare the bike before leaving your base, with particular attention to secure wheels, working brakes and tyres suitable for the intended trails.

For refreshments and a separate visitor stop, Sandwell Valley Visitor Centre has the Courtyard Kitchen and countryside shop. Its courtyard, museum and activities belong to the broader visitor destination. Organise that visit around its own opening arrangements and the route between the facilities and your riding area. Carry food for the session itself so an unexpected delay returning to the visitor centre does not decide when a child or tired rider gets a break.

Seasons and weather

Use the forecast to choose both the riding session and what to carry while resting between laps. Wind and rain can change the assessment of a jump or braking area, and a repeat visit still begins with inspecting the current surface. Follow any maintenance barriers or temporary signs. If conditions remove the comfortable margin you had expected, shorten the session or use an easier option instead of treating a planned number of runs as a target that must be completed.

Camping and places to stay near Hilltop Bike Park

A base in West Bromwich

West Bromwich and the wider Birmingham area offer different bases for a Sandwell Valley riding break. Choose accommodation around the actual journey to the park and your evening plans, then ask the property directly about secure bicycle storage. The accommodation shortlist identifies real nearby stays; it does not certify every hotel as having a bike room or wash facility. Confirm late arrival and storage before bringing expensive equipment to reception.

Non-riders can plan their own Sandwell Valley Visitor Centre outing, with its courtyard, countryside shop and museum about Sandwell Priory and the wider estate. Arrange where the group will reunite after the riding session, particularly if some visitors explore a different part of the valley. A separate visitor-centre plan makes a mixed day easier to enjoy without asking walking companions to wait beside downhill tracks. Leave time to change and organise the bikes before heading for food.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hilltop currently open?

Sandwell Council’s current urban bike-park page says the facility is open to the public. Local signs and any temporary closure still govern the riding on your visit.

Which grades are confirmed?

OnTrack publishes two blue trails, two red trails and one black trail. Individual grade-to-name assignments are not stated in the readable builder text, so use the park board.

Is a green trail confirmed at Hilltop?

No green Hilltop flow trail is confirmed in the builder’s published five-trail list. Do not transfer beginner facilities elsewhere in Sandwell Valley onto these descents.

Does the site have an uplift?

No current official uplift service was verified. Plan a session that includes your own return to the start and keep the signed approach clear.

Where can companions get refreshments?

The wider Sandwell Valley Visitor Centre advertises the Courtyard Kitchen. Its facilities and opening arrangements are separate from the five flow trails.
