Introduction

Beecraigs Country Park combines graded forest riding with a separate mountain-bike skills area near Linlithgow. West Lothian Council’s current notice says both the trails and skills area are open. The official map offers a green route, blue circuit, two red loops, a black route and the Drop Zone. That range makes the park useful for a group with different aims, from a contained introduction to a more technical woodland session.

The practical choices begin with where you start and how much riding you want to combine. Trail information is available at Balvormie car park and the Visitor Centre; the skills area is beside Lochside car park. Choose a meeting point deliberately instead of treating those locations as interchangeable. Most approaches and forest paths are shared, while only the red-route singletrack has the council’s specific priority arrangement for mountain bikers.

Green Route and Blue Route

The current council-linked map labels the green route easy at 3.6 km and the blue route moderate at 5.3 km. Choose the option around the least confident rider’s handling and available energy. These are separate mapped choices, not a requirement to combine both. Give pedestrians and horse riders space on shared sections and use the map to keep the return to your starting car park clear.

Red Route Loop 1 and Loop 2

red

The map names two difficult red loops: Loop 1 is 3.6 km and Loop 2 is 4 km. Council guidance gives mountain bikers priority only on the red-route singletrack, where walkers and horse riders have alternatives. That arrangement does not extend to every connecting track. Decide which loop to ride before setting out and reassess wet sections instead of assuming the whole network handles identically.

Black Route, Drop Zone and Skills Area

The official map labels the black route severe and identifies the Drop Zone and separate skills area. No reliable black-route length is asserted here. Treat these features as individual choices after reading the signs and inspecting the intended line. The skills area beside Lochside offers a focused practice session without requiring the whole group to follow a red or black circuit.

Best first ride

For a first visit, start with the skills area or a mapped green outing and agree how the group will move between practice and riding. Use the skills area to understand control on unfamiliar features, keeping entry and exit spaces clear. A short successful session is more useful than rushing through every grade on the map. Allow companions time to watch a feature before deciding whether to ride it themselves.

Experienced visitors can choose one red loop as the main objective and leave optional harder riding until the group has assessed the ground. Use the mapped route names when agreeing a regroup point so nobody waits beside the wrong circuit.

Where is Beecraigs?

Use Beecraigs Visitor Centre EH49 6PL, then the official park map for the chosen trailhead. Linlithgow has an off-road approach through Hillhouse Woodland. Official directions →

The council gives EH49 6PL for Beecraigs Visitor Centre. Use the official country-park map to choose Balvormie, Lochside or the Visitor Centre as your arrival reference. Balvormie has trail information, while Lochside is the useful landmark for the skills area. Those details can prevent a mixed party from starting in different parts of the park. Share the actual meeting place before travelling and use current council directions for the approach, with access roads and gates kept clear during unloading.

The council describes an off-road cycling connection from Preston Road in Linlithgow through Hillhouse Woodland into Beecraigs. That gives a named approach to investigate when staying in town. Include its outward and return sections in your plan, together with the journey from your accommodation or railway arrival. Rail bicycle arrangements and any town-road connections need their own preparation; the forest trail map does not establish a guaranteed train space.

Facilities

Bring a serviced bicycle, water, lunch and the essentials for your chosen circuit. The council’s riding page confirms the skills area, routes and visitor information but does not establish current bicycle hire, uplift or workshop provision. Arrange any such service with a named business separately.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code and the council’s local instructions shape the shared sections. Give way to walkers and horse riders, control speed around junctions and avoid surprising someone from behind. The red singletrack priority arrangement is specific; it cannot be used as a reason to demand priority on a forest road or approach path. Respect the volunteer-maintained surfaces and leave a feature alone if it is barriered or being repaired.

The Visitor Centre has public toilets, outdoor seating and the Hideaway Café serving breakfast and lunch. Toilets depend on opening hours, with facilities at Balvormie and Lochside closing shortly before the centre. From 28 September to 25 October 2026, the Visitor Centre opens daily 9am–5pm; car parks have separate gates and seasonal closing times.

Seasons and weather

The council-linked map asks riders to avoid churning up wet and boggy ground. In unsettled weather, choose a route that can be ridden without widening muddy areas or damaging the trail edges. Stop to reassess traction before a harder section and leave time for the return if the group slows down. A forecast and spare dry layer help with pauses, but neither removes a temporary closure or makes saturated ground suitable for repeated riding.

A base in Linlithgow

Linlithgow is a practical town base for accommodation, rail arrival and an evening meal. Choose a property around the actual route into Beecraigs and ask about secure bicycle storage before booking.

The Four Marys is a named Linlithgow pub with its own booking page, allowing a planned post-ride meal after returning from the park. The venue asks visitors bringing a dog to contact it directly about the appropriate area. Companions can organise their own country-park walk using the council’s visitor map, with a clear meeting place afterward.
